Balanced Diet

A balanced diet is one which contains different types of foods in such quantities and proportions that the need for calories, minerals, vitamins, and other nutrients is adequately met and a small provision is made for extra nutrients to withstand short duration of leanness.

Nutrients are chemical constituents of food which specific functions to carry out in the body.  Functions of nutrients can be classified into three categories

  1. Energy Giving
  2. Body Building
  3. Body Regulating

A balanced diet can be formulated using the five main food groups.

  1. Cereal and their products
  2. Meat, pulse, and nut group
  3. Milk group
  4. Vegetables and fruit group
  5. Sugar, fats, and oil group
